Sooo before reading this blog.. read this article. Per Henrik Zahl is the scientist behind this study that basically said:
--frequent mammograms are unnecessary because many tumors will regress on their own without treatment --breast/prostate cancer isn't deadly
While this article doesn't say anything about blacks/african-americans (whichever you prefer)... If this foolishness disguised as science and sense gets around, its implications could possibly have devastating effects on our community. If anybody knows about the health disparities that exist with breast cancer alone.. you know that black women are diagnosed less with breast cancer yet have the highest mortality rate... If we get the disease we are less likely to last 5 years.. Why?

I'm not one really interested in politics like other people are. However, when there is an issue important to me, I do go out and try to get it passed. When I was a junior in high school, I wanted the millage in my city to pass, started a group for that. It passed. When I was a freshman in college.. proposition 2 came up, which is similar to prop 209 in California that ended affirmative action. I rallied for that, especially at my school and in the neighborhoods (University of Michigan. We lost that battle. Now, the presidential elections... I've been canvassing neighborhoods, and standing on random corners trying to get people to vote.
This election is the most important ones in our lifetime, whichever the outcome.
I went to the Jay-Z concert on Saturday that the Barack Obama campaign put on to get people registered to vote. It was AWESOME by the way,(more on that later) but Jay-Z said something that made me realize how much more important this is. He said now, he really feels like you can grow up to be anything that you wanted to be. That sounds cliche', but this is coming from one of the richest and most influential black men in this country and possibly the world. Even HE didn't believe that before now. This election does not only affect us, it is affecting black people across the world. Africa and its diaspora.
After experiencing all the racist bullshit that I've experienced these past 4 years at my university, having the Obama campaign experience, listening to Obama speak, listening to others speak about Obama, taking two classes on race this semester (great time huh) and watching this video.. I sat and I cried... well got teary-eyed.. and that says a lot because I am NOT emotional. But.. I think about my great-grandma, grandma, mom, and me and just realize how far we have come as a people. We aren't there yet.. but we are making progress.

What do ya'll think? Well... I'll tell you what I think. I agree with D.L., on some points. I agree with him on his point that our black leaders put so much time and effort into stuff that don't really matter, stuff that are not REAL issues in the African-American community. I mean so what if rappers say niggas, so what if rappers say bitches, so what if rappers say hos. But by D.L.'s standards I guess I'm no a supporter of freedom of speech. I believe that there is power in words, and depending on the context of what you are saying and where you are saying it, you should not be able to get away with saying anything. That's just like cussing... yo mama probably know that you cuss... but u BETTA NOT sit yo 27-year-old self in front of her and cuss... and I'm sorry I am Don Imus's mama when it comes to him saying nappy-headed hos... you bet not say that shit around me AND don't let me find out..
People sit up here and say that back in the day people were more respectful, they did not use that kind of language in music. I listen to a lot of old-school and I would say.. I agree. I also agree that back in the day times were harder and people were more respectful etc, etc, etc. Today, we have all this black on black violence and our men disrespecting our women etc, etc, etc. Now these rappers didn't learn this out of thin air. People don't just wake up one day and go "Oh I think I want to start calling you a bitch and start selling drugs". Well.. maybe some people... but u feel me. You can try to censor these rappers and put all of this time and money campaigning about how we should get these things banned from music and tv but NOTHING is going to change. Nothing at all.. Why is that? Because the people are not changing. You can't expect that just because the rappers stop saying something that it's going to disappear. In a sense.. the people don't follow the rappers, the rappers follow the people. So if you stopped every rapper from saying bitch, nigga, and ho without changing the state of the black community then what? Nothing happens... You get a new rapper that comes out talkin bout nigga, bitch, and ho because thats all he knows.. So Al, Jesse, and Uncle Russell, what you need to be advocating is educating our children and helping our people.. and stop trying to put a band-aid over a bullet hole..
